How long do roofs last?In a perfect climate, most asphalt roofing systems begin to break down and become compromised around the 20 year mark. However, roofs are exposed daily to harsh climates such as UV rays, heat, hail, ice and snow that can cause damage to the roof components. We recommend having a qualified roofing contractor inspect your roof once a year to determine if there is any damage.
-
Why are my shingles losing granules?New shingles may sometimes be manufactured with extra granules called “riders” or “sleepers” that do not get imbedded into the shingle mat and can fall off shortly after installation. However, large areas of granule loss that expose the underlying asphalt place the shingle at risk of premature failure because UV rays can now get to the asphalt layer. Excessive or rapid granule loss may be covered by your manufacturer warranty. In situations in which hail has knocked off large areas of granules, you can expect the life of your shingles to be appreciably reduced due to the effects of ultraviolet radiation from the sun and should be investigated by your homeowner’s insurance carrier. If you notice that your shingles are losing granules, give us a call first so we can determine if your roof system has been compromised.
-
If my roof is leaking do I need to replace the entire roof?A leaking roof can have many different causes. The goal of your roof covering is to shed water off your roof and away from your home. When a roofing system fails, it's important to pinpoint the cause. Calling a qualified roofing inspector, like 3:16 Roofing & Construction, to inspect your roof is easy and hassle-free. We can inspect the roof to determine if the damage is repairable or not. There are many cases where a leaking roof can be repaired, but this is not always the best option, or an easy one. Often, a leaking roof can be a sign to an underlying problem in the integrity of the entire roofing system, such as storm damage. If we determine the roof has been compromised by a storm, we'll be able to advise you on the best course of action. We offer a free visual damage report so that you can be fully aware of what damage is, or isn't, on your roof.

What are there streak stains on my roof?Streak stains and discoloration on roofs are most commonly caused by algae growth. This can be easily cleaned and removed by a qualified roofing professional. Manufacturing defects can also be a cause of roof staining, caused by diffusion of light oils from the asphalt into the surface of the granules. Contact us to find out if these issues are covered under your shingle warranty.
-
Do I really need attic ventilation?Yes! Proper ventilation is integral to the performance of your roof system. The Limited Lifetime Warranty offered on all our Certainteed Integrity Roofing Systems requires proper ventilation and installation.
-
Can I use a radiant barrier on my roof?Yes! Properly installed radiant barriers are compatible with our Certainteed Integrity Roofing Systems. If installed per manufacture guidelines, use of a radiant barrier will not void the Certainteed Limited Lifetime Warranty. Radiant barriers can be a great option for reducing energy costs in your home.
-
Can I use a sprayed in foam installation with my Certainteed shingle?Yes! Certainteed allows the use of a properly installed spray foam insulation, often referred to as a “nailboard insulation”, with their Certainteed Integrity System. This will not void the warranty, though it is important to make sure that your roof remains properly ventilated to prolong the life of the roof components.
-
What is Tobacco-Juicing?This sticky brown residue, descriptively named “tobacco-juice” after its color, is a residue that may accumulate on roofs under certain weather conditions and stain the roofing material. This stain may be more visible on light colored roofs. It is water soluble and can typically be washed off.
-
Can you roof over my existing shingles?Providing local code allows, it is possible to recover your existing asphalt shingle. However, this may void your manufacturer warranty. In order to offer a Certainteed 5-Star Warranty, we must be allowed to remove your existing roof covering down to the decking. 3:16 Roofing & Construction does not recommend reshingling over your existing shingle layer as we are unable to see any damage that may exist underneath the surface.
-
What is flashing?Flashing is any material used to cover joints in a roofing construction. Flashing functions as an added layer of protection that keeps water from seeping into vulnerable areas, such as valleys, chimneys, skylights, and the areas around ventilation components. Most flashing is made from aluminum or galvanized steel, though plastic and rubber flashings are common. Flashing can be damaged by exposure to weather and storms, so it's a good idea to have a qualified roofing contractor inspect your roof for damage at least once a year. Luckily, flashing fixes are typically quick and inexpensive.

How long will it take to install my new roof? This is dependent upon the size of your home, weather forecasts, and the type of roof you’re having installed. Typically, 3:16 Roofing & Construction completes most asphalt shingle roof installations in just one day. We try to make the process as quick and simple as we can while offering a quality service that doesn’t cut any corners.

Is my property damage covered by insurance? In the event that your home or property is damaged by a storm, your homeowner's insurance carrier is there to provide appropriate coverage where applicable. Each homeowners policy is different, so it's best to contact your insurance company to request an inspection if you suspect there may be damage. If you're uncertain weather there is damage, call 3:16 Roofing & Construction and we'll provide a free inspection report so you'll have a clear picture of your home's integrity.
